about sharon

sharon radisch is a photographer, artist and designer who circumvented a traditional path to a career in the arts. after graduating with a biology/pre-med degree and landing an unsatisfying office job in nyc, she moved to paris to study the french language. intending to stay for six months, she remained in France for three years while completing a master’s degree in biology and cellular physiology at the sorbonne université pierre et marie curie. this unique educational background lent her an eye for abstraction as she witnessed the cohesive nature of organic life and cells in isolation. for several years, radisch applied this interest in interaction to her work in the medical field. after long days in the laboratory, she sought solace in creative practice and began assembling sculptural still lifes to photograph. quickly, her creative practice blossomed into a full-time career as her unique compositions caught the eye of luxury brands and publications, including chanel, t: the new york times style magazine and harper’s bazaar. after leaving her job in the medical field in 2013, her biological work seems like only a mere stepping stone to her 11 year career as a photographer and artist. radisch has become known for her sculptural work, color theory and form studies; whether the medium be photography, painting, sculpture or design her work emulates the organic - integrating disparate elements to compose an unexpected harmony. her fine art and commercial work are seen as indistinguishable with studies on forms, interactions, texture, color and tension. given the sculptural nature of her photographic work, especially her meticulously constructed still lifes, it seemed only a natural progression for her to explore creating and showing her sculptural work in the third dimension outside the constraints of a digital or printed photograph, via sculpture, painting and object design. in 2023, radisch completed an artistic residency in the south of france, to explore what felt like a seamless transition into sculpture and painting - an essential shift in her career as an artist. the themes she most often finds herself exploring include the environment, form vs function, and connectivity vs isolation. her residency allowed her to focus on bringing to life new sculptures and paintings that have been a long time in the making through studies of shape, photography, and design renderings. in expanding her sculptural photography practice, a body of work not limited to painting and sculpture evolved celebrating a study of shape, interplay, texture and tension.

to see the world abstractly is to see it in its fullness

digital exhibition — trnk editions new york, curator : tariq dixon

through still life photography, photographer sharon radisch has been exploring isolation and connectivity while sheltering in place, in new york city.

“as my isolation began on march 12, 2020, i began thinking about what this isolation means and how it relates to us as individuals and as a whole. most of the world is in isolation now, with one common goal. this is a first, in my lifetime, where most everybody in the world is working to attain the same outcome. as individuals, we are isolated, but as a whole we are working together. additionally, i have been observing and considering connectivity. during this time, people are striving to stay connected to each other more than ever. whether it be virtually, by phone or by other means of socially distant communication, people are searching for comfort, strength and a sense of normalcy through connectivity. in creating this project during my isolation time, i would like to stress that this is not a glorification of this tragedy. i am thankful to have been one of the fortunate to remain healthy up until this point. my heart is heavy for the state of the world, and those who have suffered sickness and losses from this pandemic. i am also truly thankful for and eternally indebted to the essential workers who are keeping our world afloat.”

a visual study of language

there are over 600 languages spoken in new york city. in order to study the visual movements of a greeting from different languages, the top 20 languages spoken in new york city were determined. to arrive at 18 languages, english and french were eliminated since i am fluent in those languages, leaving 18 languages, which were randomly assigned to a color of rouge allure laque. a greeting word from each of the 18 languages was recorded, wearing the assigned color of rouge allure laque. each language and color combination was written on paper and selected randomly to determine the order in which they would be presented in the final work. the languages and corresponding colors from l-r are as follows :
